Retirement Calculator
Calculate your retirement fund precisely using the real rate of return. Input age, return, inflation, and expenses to instantly get your required monthly savings or affordable retirement spending, complete with practical adjustment suggestions and risk alerts.
This retirement calculator centers on the "Real Rate of Return (inflation-adjusted)", allowing estimates to directly reflect your purchasing power. It supports two modes:
- Estimate the monthly savings required to reach your goal
- Estimate the affordable monthly retirement spending based on current conditions
How to use?
- Fill in Basic Info: Current age, retirement age, life expectancy
- Input Financial Assumptions
- Current retirement savings (Lump sum principal)
- Annualized inflation rate (Recommended range: 1.5%–2.5%)
- Expected Annual Return: Pre-retirement / Post-retirement (Nominal)
- Select Assessment Mode
- Mode A: Estimate monthly savings required (Given target monthly living expenses)
- Mode B: Estimate affordable monthly retirement spending (Given fixed monthly contribution)
- View Results: We display key metrics such as "Accumulation Phase", "Withdrawal Phase", "Total Assets at Retirement", "Target Retirement Fund", and Gap/Monthly Savings Needed.
- Adjust per Suggestions: If the goal isn't met, the tool suggests adjustments (increase monthly savings, extend accumulation period, adjust return assumptions, lower target spending, etc.).

Explanations of Fields and Assumptions
Annualized Inflation Rate: Used to convert nominal returns into "Real Returns".
Pre / Post-Retirement Return: Post-retirement capital allocation should be conservative to preserve the principal, hence the lower return assumption.
Monthly Contribution (Mode B): Calculated as "end-of-period payment" (ordinary annuity).
All results presented in today's currency value: To better reflect actual living purchasing power.
Field Condition Notices
Age relationships must meet these conditions:
- Retirement Age > Current Age
- Life Expectancy > Retirement Age
If Nominal Return ≤ Inflation, note that the real return may be low or negative, increasing the difficulty of reaching retirement goals.
Interpreting Results and Planning Suggestions
Not Met: Prioritize adjusting ① Monthly savings, ② Retirement age, ③ Target post-retirement spending.
Close to Goal: Review investment fees, risk tolerance, and tax burdens to minimize friction costs.
Goal Met: Start planning withdrawal phase asset allocation, cash flow buffers (at least 2–3 years), insurance, and medical reserves.
Strategic Planning (From Simple to Advanced)
- Start early & increase fixed monthly savings (Automatic transfer is most effective)
- Delay retirement by 1–3 years (Reduces withdrawal period, increases accumulation period; significant effect)
- Segment post-retirement spending (Higher in the first 5–10 years, slightly lower afterwards)
- Lower the withdrawal rate (e.g., 4% → 3.5%)
- Plan for long-term care/medical funds, premiums, and taxes
- Asset activation (Downsizing, reverse mortgage, etc.) and annuity products as defensive cash flow
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why use "Real Rate of Return"?
Subtracting inflation from nominal return allows the retirement amount to directly reflect living purchasing power, making planning more intuitive.
Why is the post-retirement return lower?
Most people shift to conservative asset allocation to reduce volatility risk, so expected returns usually drop.
How to include Labor Insurance/Pension?
Treat their monthly receivable amount as a deduction from the "Target Monthly Retirement Spending (Monthly Living Expenses)".
What if Nominal Return ≤ Inflation?
Real return may be 0 or negative, requiring higher savings or a longer accumulation period to reach the goal.
